CHILDREN + YOUNG PEOPLE
Tackling Violence programme in Secondary schools
Developing awareness of the damaging impact of violence on personal, family and community relationships is the motivation behind our Secondary school Tackling Violence programme.
The programme was born out of the work of the Violence Reduction Unit and the No Knives, Better Lives campaign. Building on those initiatives it takes an early intervention and preventative approach to helping young people discuss and explore their thoughts, feelings, beliefs and experiences of the challenging topic of violence.
Tackling Violence objectives
This programme helps young people to consider how violence impacts on individuals and communities, and the impact this has on relationships. Participants explore their thoughts, feelings and actions in relation to violence in their own community, and consider ways to respond to peer pressure.
Specific themes addressed during the Secondary school Tackling Violence programme include:
- Understanding of the consequences of knife crime.
- Expressing emotions.
- Belief systems, consequences and conflict.
- How conflict impacts on behaviours and relationships.
- Attitudes, values and origins of violence
- Personal impact of violence in the community.
- Personal choice and peer pressure
- Empathy and how different perspectives can impact and change behaviours.
The Spark’s Tackling Violence programme is delivered over four or six weeks to S1 and S2 pupils, with each workshop lasting one hour. Our Children and Young People Team (CYP) use a counselling-based methodology, encouraging an exploration of what lies behind the words and actions of individuals.
By taking a non-judgemental and empathetic approach, young people can fully express themselves and gain insight in to the reasons behind their actions. This insight can lead to modified action and change, building a young person’s resilience to face life’s challenges.
