Great counselling careers and career progression are fundamental to The Spark’s mission. Our people are our greatest assets and as an organisation, we continually invest in our colleagues.
Counsellors joining The Spark, at any stage of their formal qualifications, can benefit from a range of learning and development opportunities. These include our Diploma in Relational Counselling and advanced training in areas such as supervision.
Counselling career progression
We are proud of the career progression pathways that exist at The Spark. Many of our colleagues have progressed through multiple stages of their professional qualifications with us.
Several have also then moved into management and operational roles within The Spark. The opportunities for skills development and career progression are only limited by your imagination and ambition.
Training opportunities for Counsellors
Training opportunities are also available to counsellors from outside The Spark. We have welcomed many new colleagues into our teams after the completion of their qualifications.
Working at The Spark

Q. What first attracted you to working at The Spark?
I loved the ethos within the organisation and what they offer as a counselling provider and training centre is something that I wouldn’t get anywhere else. It was also the opportunity to work in schools.
Q. How has your career as a counsellor developed since starting with The Spark?
It’s developed massively. I completed The Spark’s Advanced Diploma in Relational Counselling which blew everything else out of the water for me. The course helped me grow, both personally and professionally. With Children and Young People as my chosen specialism, the Diploma has opened up so many doors for me.
I could never have been imagined being invited to speak at the Scottish Parliament’s Education and Skills Committee and helping, in a small way, to shape mental health strategy for the future. I’ve also worked in some amazing schools with truly inspiring pupils and teachers. Without The Spark, this would never have happened.
Q. What are the benefits of working as a counsellor with The Spark?
There are so many. For me, it is the training counsellors receive. It is training like no other and covers so much more than one modality. This has helped me grow into a confident and consciously competent counsellor.
I also have a great management team and clinical team that provides all the support I need to deliver to the best of my ability.
